Just A Moment
The last
publisher's letter of the century...now that's pressure. The easy way out is to write
about the many achievements of the past and the great potential for the future. Instead,
though, I am going to focus on something much more important than yesterday or tomorrow.
Something even more important than today. The focus of my final written words to you in
1999 will be the moment.
If you think about it, the only time you really have any control is at this very moment. You can't do anything about the past. You can plan for the future, but we all know how well that system works. Right now is the only time that you're in charge. So, rather than discuss what we've already done or what we could do, let's consider what we are doing right now. Or instead, let's try to always consider what we are doing right now. What will we do with this moment?
First, I would suggest that we spend each moment wisely. It seems that there are many of these moments, but they tend to whiz by pretty fast. Before you know it, your moments are in short supply. In fact, none of us really knows how many moments we have left.
So, how do you spend a moment wisely? Perhaps a better word than "wisely" is "consciously." Be aware that you are consuming moments and choose the manner in which you do so. No one controls how you spend your moments except you. Spend them with your family. Spend them at work. Spend them sitting on the couch or running naked into the ocean if you choose. Just be sure that you do actually choose.
I think that many times we fail to make this choice. We may get into a rut and just spend our moments without much thought. Or, we may convince ourselves that someone else controls how we use our moments. The simple fact is that your moments belong only to you.
When the clock strikes twelve and 2000 is upon us, it will only be another moment. It may be the one that you spend blowing a party horn or kissing your spouse or trying to keep the family dog from freaking out, but it will still be only one moment. A moment exactly as valuable as every other one that you have...priceless.
Best wishes for many wonderful moments to come.
