Headaches come in many forms. Whether they are from tension, eye strain or from having that extra glass of wine the night before, vitamins can help reduce these pains.
In a Q&A on TheBostonChannel.com, Dr. Carolyn Bernstein, an attending neurologist and headache specialist at the Arnold Pain Management Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston answered questions about vitamins’ effects on headaches.
She said research shows vitamin B2, aka, riboflavin, is a safe dietary supplement that may decrease both the frequency and severity of headaches. She recommends 400 mg/day.
She also notes coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and magnesium can also be helpful in preventing migraines, and magnesium has been shown to reduce menstrual migraines. For other herbal treatments, such as feverfew and butterbur, she said more research is needed, but they are “certainly worth considering.”
