Chronic inflammation can cause serious problems, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, diabetes, stoke and Alzheimer’s disease. Help your shoppers overcome this immune system overload by steering them toward certain foods and away from others. An article in U.S. News and World Report offers a list of foods to choose and to avoid when combating inflammation.

They write the foods that help reduce inflammation include: omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs); colorful produce packed with flavonoids, herbs and spices like ginger, turmeric and rosemary; chocolate; and wine.

They suggest people who suffer from chronic inflammation should consumer less omega-6 fats, found corn, safflower and vegetable oils; trans fats; rancid fats (meaning oil that’s heating to the point of smoking); white starches like flour, sugar, white rice and instant mashed potatoes; animal fats; and excess alcohol.
