Fighting Depression Naturally

While depression is common around the globe, there are efficacious natural ways to fight the mental disorder, according to a new article in Natural Health. On the supplement and diet side of things, the author notes St. John’s wort has been used for many years to improve mood; also, people with low levels of folic acid are more often depressed—consider eating more foods rich in folate such as leafy greens, beans and grains, or taking a daily supplement. More basic diet tips include reducing consumption of alcohol (itself a depressant) and eating fewer sweets to promote balanced, consistent blood sugar levels instead of a sugar high and sugar crash.

Getting outside and getting active can also help. Sunlight and fresh air have a calming effect on the body, and exercise can decrease stress hormone levels. Yoga is another option to reduce stress levels as it promotes deep breathing and muscle relaxation.
