Foods to Support Eye Health

There are a number of steps adults can take to preserve their eyesight and fight the onset of such conditions as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), reported Renee Haswell for suite101. Start with the basics such as keeping the body hydrated and avoiding highly processed foods that are low in nutritional value and may even block absorption of key nutrients. Instead, choose brightly colored whole organic foods or beverages, or consider taking high-quality dietary supplements.

One key class of nutrients to look for are carotenoids, the deeply colored pigments found in orange, red, yellow and green fruits and vegetables. Good sources include kale, carrots, oranges and all varieties of peppers. Carrot- or spinach-based raw juices supply high levels of carotenes as well as the recommended levels of vitamins A and C. Lutein is one particularly important carotenoid for eye health, and can be found in many multivitamins, as well as in bilberries (try bilberry jam on toast).
