Pregnant women need to take vitamin supplements, buy organic food, and stay away from phthalates and Bisphenol A, according to the lead investigator of the National Children's Study, a 21-year study that will help identify the causes of chronic childhood illnesses like autism, asthma, obesity and learning disorders.  Dr. Philip Landrigan, who is also the winner of the 2010 Heart of Green "Protector" Award offered eight tips for women who are, or may become, pregnant in an article on the Daily Green. Women could fulfill some of his advice by shopping at natural products stores.

For instance, he advises women to take vitamin supplements, noting getting the recommended dose of folic acid is crucial. He said this B vitamin can prevent serious birth defects.

He also told women to avoid phthalates and Bisphenol A (BPA), which are found in many products such as soft plastics, personal care products and food containers. However, many products in natural products stores are free of these controversial chemicals. These chemicals can mimic human hormones in the body and can harm child development. He said pregnant women shouldn’t microwave food in plastic, should avoid canned foods and only use bottles that are BPA-free.

Expecting women should also avoid pesticides, he said, noting organic foods are a better option than conventionally grown products because they lack harsher pesticides.

Additionally, Dr. Landrigan recommends women stay healthy in general (exercise, maintain a low blood pressure and keep a healthy weight), get vaccinated, avoid lead, eat only fish that is mercury and/or PCB free, and maintain a healthy environment.
