Fighting Stress with Nutrients

Consumers are under increasing levels of stress, but following some good nutritional practices can help them better manage it. Writing for The Huffington Post, Hyla Cass, M.D., noted stress does play an important role in the body, helping mobilize it to address emergencies by releasing hormones, elevating blood pressure and blood sugar, and increasing heart rate. However, she added chronic stress can manifest in conditions such as headaches, fatigue, substance abuse and even immune dysfunction.

Cass noted there are many important natural substances that can help the body better manage stress. Among them are basic vitamins and minerals that help in the function of the nervous system. A B vitamin complex (important to avoid a deficiency of one versus another), vitamin C (for adrenals and immunity) and magnesium are often depleted in people dealing with chronic stress.

Other options include amino acids such as 5-HTP, a precursor to the feel-good hormone serotonin; L-theanine, which is found in green tea and works to help the body and mind relax and focus; and GABA, glutamine and glycine to enhance GABA levels. Or consider botanicals like valerian, which also acts on the brain’s GABA receptors, exerting a tranquilizing effect. Botanicals such as Siberian ginseng, Rhodiola rosacea, reishi and Ashwagandha are considered adaptogens, which provide a boost to the adrenals and stamina, and can enhance mood while bringing the body into stasis.

Additional tips from Cass include getting sufficient sleep, exercising regularly, taking relaxation breaks, following a healthy diet and building up a support network.
