Doc Says Most Men Low in Vitamin D

Endocrinologist and vitamin D expert Sarfraz Zaidi, M.D., reports many men of all ages have vitamin D deficiency but don’t know it, which can lead to a number of serious diseases. In addition to top killers heart disease, prostate cancer and colon cancer, other problems with lack of sufficient D include high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome and diabetes, as well as conditions such as chronic fatigue, lack of well being and lack of stamina.

Dr. Zaidi called vitamin D deficiency a “true disease” that can affect every organ in the body. He said boosting levels of vitamin D, a hormone, can significantly improve chronic fatigue, stamina, sense of well-being, muscle strength, the immune system and the cardiovascular system.

He advised men a simple blood test for 25 (OH) Vitamin D can determine deficiency and should be checked regularly with a physician. Based on his extensive experience with patients, he placed the optimal daily dose of vitamin D for most men at a range of 2,000 I.U to 10,000 I.U., which is significantly more than the usual dose of 400 I.U. found in multivitamins and calcium supplements.

To remedy deficiency or just to ensure consistent vitamin D levels, he recommended men utilize all sources, including sensible sun exposure, proper nutrition and most importantly proper dose of vitamin D supplements.
