Everyone can benefit from detoxification, due to the abundance of toxins in the modern environment and average diet/lifestyle. However, experts universally note detoxification is an individual process, the methods and duration of which are dependent upon the individual’s health and lifestyle situation, not to mention preferences.
“Detoxification is an on-going process in the body; therefore, daily support with certain nutrients and supplements is important to make the process efficient,” said Amy Fitzpatrick, RD, Natrol. “However, in certain instances (e.g., during weight loss, heavy metal or hazardous chemical exposure, spring cleaning, etc.), a more intense detoxification regimen may be indicated.”
Jon Wright, Enzymatic Therapy, noted a major detoxifying cleanse can be done two to four times per year. “However, drinking plenty of water, avoiding processed foods, and choosing antioxidant supplements are lifestyle changes anyone can make to stay refreshed between cleanses.”
In many cases, the more intensive programs would have greater value for people that have more significant and immediate health challenges, added Jack Grogan, CN, Uckele Health & Nutrition. “Though sometimes the gentler, less intensive detoxification programs would be wiser depending on the person’s vitality and general state of health,” he said, noting for people who want to incorporate a detoxification program as part of a preventive health and wellness lifestyle, the less intensive program is fine. “People with health challenges should always have supervision by a qualified health professional with experience in detoxification programs,” he cautioned.
Karta Purkh Singh Khalsa, an herbalist with Yogi Tea, noted detox should not be uncomfortable. “People who have significant toxin build-up can approach the detox with a continuous program until they no longer have signs of accumulated waste materials,” she said. “Another approach is an easy detox for one day, followed by a transition back to a normal life maintenance program. After a rest period of a few days, a person repeats the detox for two days and continues increasing the duration of the cleanse and the intensity of the procedure until there are no signs of toxicity.”
