Treating Headaches with Homeopathy
Frank J. King Jr., N.D., D.C.
09/01/2004 Headaches account for over 10 million medical doctor visits each year in the United States and are one of the most common reasons for absence from work and school. And while they are commonly treated with over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers, those medicines only offer temporary relief from the pain, rather than addressing the source of the headache. Homeopathy, however, has done wonders for the correction of the contributory causes and can actually affect the cure for most headaches. Tension headaches are the most common type among adults. Up to 80 percent of the U.S. population suffers from occasional tension headaches, and 3 percent suffer from daily tension headaches. Women are twice as likely to suffer from tension headaches as men. Tension headaches last from 30 minutes to several days. Commonly, the symptoms are expressed as a band-like pain, pressure or throbbing. Severity usually increases significantly with its frequency.Toxic headaches have been the least acknowledged medically. They are easily identified when they can be directly associated with exposure to a toxin. However, most toxins are slow and insidious in their symptomatic nature. Various homeopathic detoxification products may activate the body’s own detoxification mechanisms.Sinus headaches most commonly occur around the forehead, cheekbones, eye orbits, and the base of the nose. Allopathic drugs rarely correct the causes of sinus problems, and commonly leave the patient with chronic, recurring sinus problems.Cluster headaches are usually one-sided and the most intensely painful (up to 100 times more painful than a migraine). Fortunately, they are least common, affecting less than one in 1,000 people. They typically start before age 30 and occur for a “cluster” of time, varying from two weeks to three months. The headaches will occur one to three times per day and last between 30 and 90 minutes. They will commonly awaken a person one to two hours after going to bed. After the cluster period, they will go into remission for months or years, only to recur. Attacks appear to be linked to the circadian or biological clock associated with the pineal gland and hypothalamus, which regulate the sleep and wake cycles. These headaches occur most often during seasonal changes of spring or fall. They seem to be more associated with changes in daylight time rather than allergy. A migraine headache is a vascular-type headache associated with changes in the size of the arteries both within and outside the brain. An estimated 28 million Americans suffer from migraines, and an estimated additional 13 million have not been diagnosed. More women than men get migraines. Of those diagnosed, 25 percent suffer four or more attacks per month, 35 percent suffer one to four attacks a month, and the remaining 40 percent suffer one or fewer attacks a month. Migraines can last only hours to several days. Four out of five migraine sufferers have a family history of migraines. A child has a 50 percent chance of having migraines if one parent has migraines, but a 75 percent chance of having migraines if both parents have them. Stress, chemicals, caffeine, weather conditions, menstrual periods, fatigue, poor sleep patterns, and skipping meals can all trigger migraines. Symptoms may include seeing an aura; sensitivity to light, noise or odors; nausea or vomiting; loss of appetite; and/or digestive disturbance such as stomach upset or abdominal pain. Children having a migraine may additionally look pale, experience dizziness, have blurred vision, and/or fever or stomach upset. Homeopathic Solutions Unlike traditional allopathic drugs that work on a biochemical level, homeopathy works to express health rather than just suppress symptoms. Homeopathic medicines work on a bio-energetic level to help the control systems, such as the nervous system and the acupuncture meridian system, of the body to work properly. With these control systems working better, everything works better in every realm of the body—physical, mental and emotional. Homeopathic medicines can affect the true cause of a condition. Homeopathy is a very highly individualized healing art. While there are highly effective headache relief formulas, additional medicines that apply specifically to presented symptoms might be needed for correction. The key to homeopathy’s great success is finding the right formulas for each individual. In addition to a homeopathic headache relief formula, these formulas might include those designed to address migraines, sinus, muscle and joint, stress, anxiety and nervousness, TMJ/jaw, eye stress, fatigue, food and chemical allergies, hay fever, and detoxification formulas.
