Mighty Little Dust Mites

Steve Myers
05/07/2008

One of the most common sources of allergens in the home is dust mites, microscopic creatures that bring “gross” discomfort into our homes and our noses.

The millions of these creatures in the home feed on shed human skin and other delicacies, and hang out on upholstery, linens, plush toys and carpets. Proteins in mite waste and even carcasses become airborne and cause allergic reactions when breathed in. While allergy relief tends to focus on ingested remedies, A. Vogel offers Mites Out™ spray, which employs a neem extract to protect against dust mites in the home. A 2004 research report in the German journal Allergo (13:269-73) concluded this neem extract spray effectively controlled growth and survival of dust mite populations over the long term. According to its U.S. marketer, Bioforce USA, the spray can be applied to mattresses, sheets, sofas and even plush toys, to help control dust mites that can otherwise result in allergic fits.
