NutraIngredients Examines The Oh-Nos Of Organics

10/06/2008

A recent NutraIngredients article examined the elitism that surrounds organic products and why everyday consumers are hesitant to by them. The article argued that organic food has become a status symbol reserved “for wealthy, middle class people indulging in their penchant for peasant food,” said Monty Don, the president of the UK’s Soil Association. In addition, organic's meaning "can shift depending on shopping context and product type,” thus confusing consumers on what actually defines a product as organic.

In order to calm consumers’ fears and apprehension about buying organic, the article proposes, “If there is more communication about what organic actually means, more people will be engaged by more of the principals.”
