Eye Love Eye Health
Earlier this month, I went to the eye doctor for the first time in my adult life. Recently, I’ve been having trouble seeing how many spaces are after a period in the copy I edit. During the visit, I learned I have 20/20 vision, but my eyes have trouble focusing. I got a prescription for reading/computer glasses (which I have yet to fulfill).
It feels good to still have 20/20 vision, but it encouraged me to want to keep the status quo as I grow older with help from eye-aiding supplements. In a recent article on ABC News, nutritional supplements are highlighted from their ability to help prevent common eye diseases.
The article states research shows some supplements may benefit eyes that are at a high risk for advanced eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). They note the Age-Related Eye Disease Study found people at high risk for advanced AMD lowered their risk of the disease by about 25 percent when they consumed a high-dose combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene and zinc. However, they added this study doesn’t suggest people without vision problems would get eye health benefits from this combination of vitamins, and many eye health experts only recommend supplements for those who are already experiencing vision loss.
However, the article states research has shown eating leafy green vegetables reduces the change of vision loss; and for those who suffer from vision loss, supplements are necessary to obtain optimum levels of nutrients. In addition, research on supplements for eye health, such as lutein, are currently underway.
So according to this article, I should not be taking supplements just to improve my eye health, but should keep an overall healthy diet. I will continue to eat my greens and take my daily multi and fish oil. Here’s to 20/20 vision well into my old age!
