As you may have heard, 10 million cans of SlimFast® brand ready-to-drink (RTD) products are being recalled by Unilever, in conjunction with FDA, due to possible contamination with Bacillus cereus bacteria. While saying the chance of serious adverse events is remote, FDA noted B. cereus may cause diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, and the company is voluntarily recalling the products, including all Slim-Fast RTD products in cans, regardless of flavor, Best-By date, lot code or UPC number. The recall was initiated after routine quality testing of the cans by Unilever. The company noted no other Slim-Fast® product—such as its powdered shakes, meal bars, or snack bars—are affected by this recall.

The weight management market has been riddled with various quality and regulatory problems, and it can be hard for retailers to keep up with all of the goings-on in this industry segment.
