Another Reason to Drink Beer?

We beer drinkers are always happy to have a healthy reason to justify our pastime. There is the antioxidant flavonoid xanthohumol from beer, and then Karlsberg (the German brewer, not the Dutch Carlsberg) even tried to make a healthier beer to draw in more women drinkers. Its functional brew, named Karla Well-Be, was fortified with soy lecithin, folic acid and other vitamins, and it was lower in alcohol than other beers.

Now comes word beer is good for the bones, thanks to its silicon content. A pair of researchers conducted chemical analyses of beer ingredients, and measured silicon content in 100 commercially available beers. Silicon content ranged from 6.4 mg/L to 56.5 mg/L. with an average of 30 mg/L. Though no official daily intake has been established, the researchers said typical daily consumption in the United States is between 20 mg to 50 mg.

Despite this good news, experts still contend any more than one or two beers per day may be bad for your health. Hey, it’s better than nothing.
