A specialty combination of glucosamine HCL and low-molecular weight chondroitin sulfate from Nutramax Laboratories (as Cosamin®) works to protect joint health, even in people with healthy cartilage. In a new study, published in the July issue of the American Journal of Veterinary Research, researchers cultured joint cartilage for two weeks under mimicked stress conditions and administered the ingredient combination. Results showed the glucosamine and chondroitin, at concentrations comparable to those able to be obtained by the body, effectively inhibited expression of agents involved in cartilage breakdown and at stimulating cartilage production. Further, the research team demonstrated the combination was also effective under normal cartilage conditions, suggesting efficacy in healthy individuals.
“These results show once again that our specific combination of ingredients supports and protects joint cartilage,” said Carmelita G. Frondoza, Ph.D., director of research and development at Nutramax. “This study provides support for their use in healthy people, especially athletes and others who are active, to help protect the joints,” added David Moore, vice president of the Consumer Products Division.
