Summer generally sees heavy promotion of weight management products as adults aim to hit the beach looking hot. This summer, Garden of Life’s fucoTHIN™ was the top-selling weight management supplement in the natural products retail channel for the 12-week period ending Sept. 8, 2007, according to market research firm SPINS. The fucoxanthin-based dietary supplement features a proprietary blend of the brown seaweed carotenoid plus pomegranate seed oil. Garden of Life staked its position by supporting two double-blind, placebo-controlled studies. In one study, consisting of 150 females, those taking fucoTHIN and following an 1,800-calorie per day diet lost an average of 14.5 pounds, compared to only three pounds in the placebo group. In the other study, the average metabolic rate increased by 18.2 percent after 16 weeks. In addition, body fat loss was 11.8 pounds in the fucoxanthin group, compared to 2.8 pounds in the placebo group. The clinical trials are pending publication in a peer-reviewed journal in early 2008.
