‘Going Green’ on the Rise

03/20/2008

CHICAGO —More than one-third of adults (36 percent) claim to “regularly” buy green products, according to a December 2007 survey conducted by Mintel of 3,085 Internet users. This percentage drastically increased from 12 percent who claimed they were buying green products just 16 months previous. Further, the number of people who stated they never purchased green products was cut in half during those 16 months. In 2006, only 20 percent claimed to never buy green products; now, only 10 percent make such a claim.

The market research firm attributed the green movement’s growth to young adults. In its latest survey, more than half of 18 to 24 year olds (51 percent) said they regularly purchase green products. “Tech-savvy young adults have been key in the green movement’s success,” said Colleen Ryan, senior analyst, Mintel. “This suggests a bright future for green products. as young adults will carry their habits and beliefs with them as they age.”

Ryan added drivers such as climate change, energy coasts and product safety will continue to create a need for environmentally friendly products and services. “Americans see greener purchases as a smart choice for both their pocketbooks and the planet,” she said. “Green shopping, both major and everyday, is definitely here to stay.”
