Green Tea Fights Back Against Exercise Damage
04/18/2008
SANTA CATARINA, Brazil—While exercise may be the key to weight loss, it may also cause oxidative damage; however, green tea consumption may protect against oxidative damage caused by exercise, according to a study at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (J Nutr. 2008;24(5):433-42) (DOI:10.1016/j.nut.2008.01.009). A total of 14 men were randomized to consume green tea three times daily or a control beverage; after seven days of consumption, the men performed a bench press exercise. Green tea reduced the post exercise concentration of lipid hydroperoxide (LH) and increased the values of total polyphenols, glutathione (GSH) and ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) as well as inhibited a significant rise in the creatine kinase (CK) and xanthine oxidase (XO) activities induced by exercise. Green tea also decreased the aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity, hypoxanthine and uric acid (UA) concentrations before and after exercise.
