OptiMSM® Increases Glutathione Levels

04/18/2008

VANCOUVER, Wash.—A study presented at the Experimental Biology 2008 Annual Meeting supports the ability of the branded ingredient OptiMSM® (methylsulfonylmethane; MSM) to increase tissue levels of the internal sulfur-containing antioxidant glutathione in the liver. The study, sponsored by Bergstrom Nutrition, suppliers of OptiMSM, was published in The Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (2008;22:445.8) and led by Robert DiSilvestro, Ph.D. DiSilvestro and a team of researchers from Ohio State University found mice given OptiMSM (80 mg/1,000 ml of drinking water) for five weeks showed higher concentrations of liver glutathione compared to animals given an unsupplemented diet.

“While prior research suggested MSM has antioxidant qualities, we didn’t know what to expect,” said Tony Keller, president of Bergstrom Nutrition. “This finding affirms that MSM is not just for people with ‘achy joints,’ and opens a whole new market for us to explore.”
