A new study found that vitamin E supplements and a high vitamin C diet may reduce mortality in elderly smokers. University of Helsinki, Finland researchers found that men who smoked aged 66 to 69 who took a vitamin E supplement and had a high dietary intake of vitamin C, reduced their mortality rates by 41 percent. However, the research also found that middle-aged smokers with a high vitamin C intake increase mortality rates by 19 percent and vitamin E had no effect on those with low vitamin C intake. The study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, suggested that younger smokers should not take Vitamin D until further research shows benefits for that age group.
