LOS ANGELES–Jarrow Formulas® Inc announced it sold its 1 billionth capsule of Bone-Up®, a calcium formula designed to improve bone density and strength. It  launched more than 23 years ago and has sold more than 4 million bottles.

Bone-Up® is features Australian bovine bone hydroxyapatite as its source of calcium. Hydroxyapatite is the same form of calcium found in human bone tissue. This is bovine bone that has not been ashed or subjected to chemical solvents. The Bone-Up® formulation also includes vitamin C, vitamin D3, vitamin K1, MK-7, folic acid, methyl B-12, magnesium, zinc, manganese, copper, boron and potassium citrate.

In 2007, a study conducted at The Ohio State University and published in the Journal of Nutritional & Environmental Medicine concluded exercise plus an increased intake of micronutrients from Bone-Up® in young, adult women can improve bone health which could lower the risk of osteoporosis later in life. In the study, 24 subjects were randomly assigned either a placebo or Jarrow Formulas’ Bone-Up®. Subjects consumed the product for eight weeks and were instructed to maintain their standard dietary practices. A resistance program was also followed three days per week for the entire eight week period. In comparing data from before and after the eight-week study interventions, the micronutrient Bone-Up® treatment plus exercise was found to produce a statistically significant decrease in the various markers of bone breakdown. The Bone-Up® treatment plus exercise also reduced plasma levels for parathyroid hormone, a hormone that stimulates bone resorption, the level of which can also be reduced by improved nutritional status of calcium and vitamin D. Jarrow Rogovin, President of Jarrow Formulas, says that the company intends to conduct further studies.
