LONDONDERRY, N.H.Stonyfield Farm is helping the Will Steger Foundation send a dozen young leaders on the “Expedition Copenhagen” to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, Dec. 5 to 19 to help raise awareness for children’s health and the health of the planet. Expedition Copenhagen will be led in part by polar explorer Will Steger, with Stonyfield Farm as the lead sponsor. Delegates will assume a leadership role in a regional climate campaign to pass strong climate legislation leading up to the international negotiations, and will also support the Will Steger Foundation Citizen Climate curriculum in schools across the United States.

The goal of the Copenhagen conference is to establish a global climate agreement before the 2012 expiration of the Kyoto Protocol, the initiative adopted by the UN in 1997 and since signed by 184 nations pledging to reduce greenhouse gas and other emissions that contribute to global warming.

“The fact that the United States is the most notable ‘non-member’ of the Kyoto Protocol makes our participation and activism around Copenhagen even more urgent,” says Stonyfield Farm president and CE-Yo Gary Hirshberg. “We are proud to partner with Will and his organization, and the participation of this group of young people is particularly inspiring.”

To celebrate this monumental moment in climate change efforts and the Steger group’s trip, Stonyfield is sponsoring a Climate Conference Sweepstakes, which will give away five Trek 7.2 bicycles, complete with upright riding style, puncture resistant tires, and a light Alpha Aluminum frame.

To enter the Sweepstakes – being promoted via Stonyfield Farm yogurt lids – consumers can enter online or by mail from Nov. 1, 2009 until Jan. 15, 2010, when a winner will be randomly chosen from the entries received. Consumers registering for the sweeps can also measure their carbon footprint using The Nature Conservancy’s Carbon Calculator linked from Stonyfield’s Web site.
