NEW YORK—Connecticut attorney general Richard Blumenthal sued CVS Caremark Corp for allegedly selling expired food, beverages and over-the-counter (OTC) medications, reports Reuters. Blumenthal accused CVS of selling expired antacids, baby formula, cough medicine, energy drinks, eggs, milk and yogurt in 20 of 45 stores reviewed in Connecticut by his office this summer. He said 10 of the 20 stores were also identified as selling expired products in earlier reviews.

The lawsuit seeks fines of up to $5,000 per violation and a halt to the sale of expired products. Reuters reports CVS agreed to pay $875,000 to settle similar charges by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo earlier this month, while rival Rite Aid Corp last December agreed to pay $1.3 million to settle with Cuomo.

Blumenthal said Connecticut's probe into sales of expired products will continue and may involve other chains, reports Reuters.
