Senate Health Bill Includes CAM

WASHINGTON—The health bill before the Senate includes legislation that includes language that some believe would require insurance companies to expand their coverage to include complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), reports the Los Angeles Times. If passed, it would also allow doctors to use alternative health providers in some treatment plans. CAM includes dietary supplements, acupuncture, Yoga and other medicines. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), chairman of the Senate Health Committee, is the leading champion of these measures.

The Los Angeles Times reports opponents say this new measure would increase costs of the health care system by including unproven treatments.
