AUSTIN, Texas—The Associate Press reports Whole Foods CEO John Mackey said the grocery chain is returning to its health-food roots, with  a focus on healthy eating education via employees, classes, books, DVDs and supper clubs. They will also provide nutrient-density food labeling and private label products designed to fit specific diets.

The AP said Whole Foods shifted from its focus on healthy food to include more indulgences highlighted in a gourmet revolution. Mackey is quoted as saying it’s time to shift away from gourmet foods and back to healthier choices. Mackey is quoted as saying the timing is perfect to return to a healthier lifestyle focus because of the obesity epidemic and the growing interest in healthier living. The changes will start to be implemented in 2010.
