NEW YORK—Shoppers are going to the store less, but when they do, they are buying bulk items and private label products, said new a 2009 analysis from WSL Strategic Retail, as reported by Gourmet Retailer.

Shoppers are spending within their limits, not stocking up as much and are willing to go to different stores to get the best price, according to the new research. Also, more shoppers are going online; on a weekly basis, 24 percent of women now shop online, making the Internet number 3 behind mass merchandisers and supermarkets (both at 64 percent) weekly, reported Gourmet Retailer.

Women are shopping for ingredients to prepare meals from home and are avoiding mass merchandisers that offer spending incentives beyond food. However, supermarkets are facing competition from deep discount dollar stores and online channels.

How America Shops 2010 MegaTrends Study is based on a national online survey of more than 1,950 men and women.
