Neurotransmitter Nutrition

Aging bodies have a more difficult time producing key compounds, and the production of neurotransmitters that improve brain cell communication is no different, according to a recent post in The Canadian. In fact, deficiencies in production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which impacts sleep, sensory perception and attention, could be behind those “senior moments”; low levels of acetylcholine are common in Alzheimer’s disease patients.

One key class of nutrients that support the health of the brain and production of neurotransmitters are phospholipids, complex natural fats found in compounds such as lecithin. Combining naturally sourced phospholipids with antioxidants and omega-3 essential fatty acids may help boost the production of neurotransmitters to enhance memory, problem-solving capacity, mood and learning.
