CINCINNATI—United Pet Group expanded its voluntary recall of certain supplements for cats and dogs to encompass more than 50 tablet and powder products because of possible salmonella contamination. FDA posted the recall notice online, including the list of products included in the recall.

Affected products include various United Pet Group Pro-Pet and Excel branded products for cats and dogs, as well as private label brands of the same products. The affected items are those with expiration dates between 01/2013 and 06/2013; the products should be removed from store shelves and consumers should stop giving the supplements to their pets.

The company initiated the recall after lab testing found some lots of the products may be contaminated with salmonella. Infected pets may show symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, decreased appetite and abdominal pain; they can also be carriers that can infect humans and other animals with salmonella. In addition, humans who have handled the products can also become infected with salmonella, particularly if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after coming into contact with affected products.

Consumers who have purchased the affected products should contact either United Pet Group (877-399-5226) or get in touch with the retailer for more information.
