Micronutrients Support Eye Health

POTSDAM, Germany—Several micronutrients including the xanthophyll carotenoids and omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) play important roles in the function and health of the eye (Klin Monbl Augenheilkd. ePub 2010 Aug 25). In a new review, researchers from Universität Potsdam examined several types of micronutrients for their effect on eye health. Lutein and zeaxanthin, for example, form the macular pigment, serving to screen out damaging ultraviolet (UV) light, exerting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and  improving contrast sensitivity and reducing screen glare. Omega-3 EFAs exert anti-inflammatory effects, and, when converted into neuroprotectin, fight oxidative-induced apoptosis in the retina. These EFAs further enhance the fluidity of the membranes in the eye.

The research team noted consumption of many micronutrients declines with age, making the use of dietary supplements useful in older adults. They added studies have shown supplementation with micronutrients including lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids can enhance eye health and fight degenerative conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
